The first few years I started to raise my own plants from seeds were very disappointing. I lost most of my seedlings to damping off disease. Everything I tried failed to deal with the loss of plants. Then I decided to try an experiment. Would beneficial fungi prevent bad-actor fungi from taking over and killing my plants? The answer is yes and I am very happy with the results.
Portland Nursery sells mycorrhizal fungi spores. I buy the Down to Earth's Granular Root Zone mycorrhizal fungi spores. It is expensive for a small bag, but I just use a pinch to a small container filled with seedling soil. I mix it into the soil, then wet down the soil, then fill my pots for starting seedlings. I now rarely lose seedlings to damping off disease. |
