HPSO Gen(i)us Program featuring Ann Amato
"Patio Plants and Their Care: Houseplants tha
t spend the summers outdoors"
Gardeners often ha
ve plants that need protection during the cooler months. Sometimes this mea
ns letting things go dormant in a cool garage or shed, but other times it m
eans keeping a plant in your home. Some folks might call these houseplants,
and they'd be correct, but calling them patio plants helps to create a cat
egory just for this group and their care. These plants get to experience th
e best of both worlds and deserve more of our attention in our personal gar
den designs and in our homes.
During the warmer months, many h
ouseplants can benefit from going on a vacation to the garden. Some plants
will likely grow better indoors if you can master this migration back and f
orth. While this process is a lot of work, it can be a lot of fun. If you c
an bring the outdoors in, why not bring the indoors out, push the process a
nd the plants to master it! It’s a whole new twist on the topic of housepla
nts!
This presentation will include advice based o
n professional and personal experience and will also show collector plants
that are great alternatives to plants commonly found in the marketplace.
Ann Amato is a seed propagator at Cistus Nursery and a propagator
at Secret Garden Growers in Canby. She's been a garden blogger (amateurbo
tannist.com) for over a decade and is the recipient of an Oregon Nurseries
Foundation Scholarship. Currently she is the President of the Mt Hood Gesn
eriad Society, an affiliated chapter of The Gesneriad Society. When not wor
king, she tends to her houseplant collection at home, many of which are eit
her gesneriads or begonias. (There are over 500 different plants in her col
lection)
